T he pristine, protected marine surroundings of Panama’s Pacific coast offer some of the best sport fishing in the world, with a catch-and-release policy that preserves fish stocks as well as allowing each guest a prized catch to be transformed by our chefs.

Here we highlight why Islas Secas is a truly extraordinary sport fishing destination, always underpinned by sustainable fishing practices.

1. Location, Location, Location

Our unspoiled location within the Gulf of Chiriquí, is truly one of our assets. We sit as part of a protected reserve in an important Marine Biological Corridor that connects 11 conservation areas, from Manglares de David, to Coiba National Park, safeguarding the migratory journeys of humpback whales, whale sharks and sea turtles among many other species. Islas Secas’s proximity to the famous fishing spots of Hannibal Bank and Montuosa Island – the home of huge marlin, yellowfin tuna and snappers – makes it easy to enjoy an exhilarating day’s sport fishing in zones that restrict commercial fishing and only allow small boats.

2. Protected & Preserved

Interesting fact: Coiba Island, in the celebrated Coiba National Park near Islas Secas, was a penal colony for the best part of a century. The result was that it was never developed while the surrounding waters were protected and preserved, allowing the flourishing of marine life.

In 2023, the Panamanian government imposed commercial fishing restrictions in approximately 56 nautical miles around the Archipelago of Islas Secas, further enhancing the thriving underwater life. We continue to monitor key environmental indicators to support marine and conservation efforts, allowing our guests an incredible opportunity to cast their line in pristine waters.

3. Year-Round Fishing

No matter what season you visit Islas Secas, we offer luxury fishing trips year-round. July through November are great for catching wahoo, while marlin and yellowfin tuna are best tackled from November to spring. Once you’ve reeled in your catch, our adept captains will help you release or – if the fish is of adequate size and a certain species – you will be allowed to keep it, meaning you’ll sample fresher-than-fresh ceviche, caught by your own hand. We always ensure snapper, rooster, sailfish and marlin are released.

4. It’s Oh-So-Quiet

You’ll immediately notice how few fishing parties are on the ocean. The restrictions on trawling, gillnets and lobster fishing mean few commercial vessels are allowed and the likelihood is that you’ll be alone, with the waters all to yourself. As all good anglers know, this of course increases your chances of a bite, which is already high due to prolific fish stocks. Most of all, without other vessels around you, you can feel immersed in Islas Secas’ wild and wonderful seascapes.

5. Flourishing Fish Stocks

At Islas Secas, our extraordinary waters are home to a huge diversity of fish. From amberjack and dorado (also known as dolphin fish) to grouper, black and blue marlin – and even dramatic sailfish – you’ll be quite literally spoiled for choice. It also means that any sport fishing you take part in won’t deplete fish stocks. We also have a one-fish-per-guest policy with your other catches released back into the ocean.

6. Great for Non-Fishers, Too

If you’re part of a group that includes keen fishermen as well as those who prefer not to fish, you’ll find Islas Secas offers the perfect solution. Unlike other fishing lodges that tend not to have luxurious facilities, you will find plenty of activity here, spread over the 14 islands we like to call home. Our beautiful private island resort has a vast array of choice, from marine safaris, hiking or paddleboarding, to cooking lessons, treatments in the spa and relaxing afternoons by the pool. At the end of each day, gather together to share stories from your adventures, perhaps over a freshly-caught platter of fish.

7. It’s All About the People

Our team is on hand to make your entire Panama sport fishing trip one to remember. We’ll find out exactly what you have in mind, whether that’s an early morning inshore trip with a picnic breakfast or a whole day at sea, reeling in sailfish. We have two vessels on hand to take you out, as well as five captains including Jacinto, Eloy and Sergio who between them have decades of experience and know these waters like the backs of their hands. You’re in for a treat…
