We are deeply committed to having a low impact on our environment, and you’ll see that throughout Islas Secas. From our operations and architecture to providing sustainable hospitality, no decisions are made without taking into account their environmental consequences. Given that we are surrounded by one of the greatest marine zones on earth, this conscious, low-impact model is vital to protect and preserve the extraordinary biodiversity of the Gulf of Chiriquí.
Energy
Our entire eco resort primarily is powered by renewable solar energy from 1,500 photovoltaic panels through a 300-meter-long solar array, making it the largest off-grid solar installation in Panama. Surplus energy is conserved in our state-of-the-art battery storage system to provide clean power overnight and in low light conditions. For peace of mind, backup generator systems are on standby to ensure seamless comfort and safety during extreme conditions or emergencies. We’ve also partnered with Sustainable Travel International to offset generator usage through investments in verified, high-quality climate projects, keeping our operations carbon-neutral.
100% Water Recycling
Water is a precious and limited natural resource on islands, and Islas Secas is committed to its conservation. All water is reclaimed, treated and repurposed for irrigation, minimizing any impact on the groundwater supply. All potable water is triple-treated and tested quarterly, with a new Nordaq glass bottling system eliminating all imported bottled water.
No Single-Use Plastics
Given our eco resort’s ocean setting, we have a thorough understanding of the harmful effects of single-use plastics on marine ecosystems. We’re working to eliminate all single-use plastics from the property, and all single-use plastic bottles have been replaced with reusable water bottles, provided to each guest upon arrival.
Zero Food Waste
Islas Secas dehydrates all food leftovers, which are then composted and turned into fertilizer, resulting in a circular, zero-waste system. Plans are also underway to create an organic on-island farm, using recycled wastewater for irrigation and featuring a robust composting program. A new zero-energy biodigester complements our composting system, reducing reliance on energy-intensive processing.
Recycling
As a remote island located 20 miles off the coast, we take great care in managing everything that comes to and leaves Islas Secas, minimizing waste and prioritizing circular solutions. We have implemented precise measures to sort, pack and recycle all solid waste from our operations, ensuring that as much as possible is diverted from landfills. Recyclable materials such as cardboard, glass and aluminum are carefully processed on-site before being transported to the mainland for responsible recycling.
Eco-Friendly
Casitas
From the very first sketches of our Casitas, we thoughtfully crafted every detail to be eco-conscious by design. Using certified sustainable wood and minimally invasive building techniques, each Casita is created to maximize cooling breezes, natural shade and spectacular views.
Measuring Our Footprint
We track every aspect of our environmental performance through the GreenView Portal, including energy use, emissions, water, waste and recycling. This data guides operational decisions and supports our commitment to continual improvement. In 2025, we completed our most comprehensive footprint assessment to date and expanded carbon offsetting to cover 100% of fuel-related emissions across the resort, our boats and our aircraft.
