Move with the Migrations
A t Islas Secas, every season reveals a powerful shift. From the arrival of the whales to the migration of birds and the turn of the forests, each season is shaped by the rhythms of nature, always offering something unique and extraordinary.
Islas Secas is defined by movement. Here, in Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí, the ocean shifts, the forests respond, and the sky marks time. These seasonal shifts, marked by migrations in sea, sky and on the earth, are our invitation to experience these great rhythms. These cycles of renewal, return and reset shape your experience, allowing a shifting view of our private luxury archipelago with every visit.
At the heart of this story is the Eastern Tropical Pacific, a vast living system that links Islas Secas with Coiba, Cocos, Malpelo and the Galápagos. A crossroads of some of the world’s greatest migrations – our visiting whales travel thousands of miles from as far as away as Antarctica to get to our nutrient-rich waters – our corner of the Pacific is marked by ocean currents, lunar tides and seasonal winds that create pathways for life.
Humpback whales arrive to breed and calve, hammerhead and whale sharks move along ancient routes, seabirds trace invisible lines across the sky, and the forests respond, opening and closing their canopies with the seasons.
Our year can be divided into three distinct seasons. Renewal, from January through March, is a time of clarity and emergence, when land and sea feel newly revealed. Dry-season forests briefly open as flowering trees draw birds and insects. Offshore, clearer waters reveal spawning reefs, pelagic fish, and exceptional visibility for diving and snorkeling.
Return, from April through September, brings convergence. Nutrient-rich upwellings fuel plankton blooms, drawing schooling fish and migratory megafauna. Hammerhead sharks pass through, humpback whales arrive from the Southern Hemisphere, and orchids bloom across the canopy. This is the peak of motion and abundance, experienced most vividly through our tailor-made Marine Safaris.
As the year turns, Reset, from October through December, softens the pace. Lunar tides reshape shorelines, reefs recover, and the forest settles into a quieter rhythm. Glassy seas, vivid sunsets, and clear night skies invite reflection and reconnection – an ideal moment for multi-generational gatherings, citizen science, and wellness-led stays before the cycle begins again.
Our guests not only witness these migrations but play a vital role in their protection. Everything we do at Islas Secas is driven by our ethos of collaborative conservation, steadfast sustainability and community-driven stewardship, where guests are invited to join our citizen science activities. Through seasonal programming, scientific partnerships, and the work of the Islas Secas Foundation, just by being here, you support the protection of the movements that keep this ocean alive.
