Our Islands

Hands-on Conservation

Conservation is woven into every Islas Secas experience. Strolling in our protected forests reveals the calls of rare birds, a boat trip becomes a thrilling Marine Safari, and spotting whale flukes plays a vital role in our global citizen science projects.

At Islas Secas, conservation in action underpins everything we do.

Sustainability and Conservation at Islas Secas

The Whales Are Here

Every August, the Gulf of Chiriquí becomes a humpback nursery, and Islas Secas sits right in the heart of it.

Seasons of Secas

Renewal Season
January through March

The start of the year sees calm seas and exceptional underwater visibility, as reefs enter spawning cycles and manta rays, marlin and sailfish cruise our clear offshore waters. Migratory birds pass overhead, while trees burst into flower and transform the forest canopy, signalling nature’s annual renewal across land and sea.

Return Season
April through September

Now is the season of change, where nutrient-rich upwellings fuel plankton blooms, bringing with it an abundance of schooling fish, hammerhead sharks and, from July, our visiting humpback whales and their calves. Blue-footed boobies nest, orchids bloom and colorful crab migrations follow lunar cycles.

Reset Season
October through December

Movement and resettlement define this season, where powerful lunar tides reshape shorelines, reefs recover and the ocean settles into clarity. Southbound bird migrations pass through, while frigatebirds begin their courtship displays. Glassy seas, vivid sunsets and crisp night skies create moments of stillness before the cycle begins again.
